We are already a week into December which means Christmas is JUST around the corner. Can you believe it? While you are busy wrapping up the to do's of this month (both figuratively and literally) let's not let the beauty of the season pass us by. Here are eight free ways to spread the love to those around us.
- Have your kiddos make cards.
If your kids are anything like mine, they love all things craft related. While I personally love receiving the pictures my little ones make, my fridge quickly runs out of room. Why not share the love to others? You can deliver them to nursing homes or they can bring them to their teachers (think school, church, extracurriculars, etc.) - Pack notes in your kids' lunches or backpacks.
If your kids are homeschooled or don't attend school yet, no problem! Just place a special note for them at their place at the table. Note ideas are not limited but may include their favorite Christmas song lyrics, a special scripture verse, or something you are looking forward to doing with them this Christmas. Kids love notes and personalization is key! - Donate gently used toys, books, clothing, housewares, etc. to your local women's shelter or homeless shelter. Of course, always call ahead to make sure they are accepting donations. I personally like this option better than donating to thrift stores where things can sit on the shelves. This way, your stuff is more likely to get used by those who are actually in need. Clearing out space in your closets before the big gift receiving holiday is also a win-win!
- This one is a super easy idea-- let someone go ahead of you in line at a busy store.
An efficient way to put a smile on someone's face and it's a good lesson in patience building. Something we could always use a little more of during this busy season! - Leave "Thank You" notes for all of those who deliver to your house.
I'm looking at you UPS, USPS, FedEx, and Amazon. Can you imagine Christmas shopping before days of the internet and easy home delivery? These people work their behinds off as is, but especially this time of year. A simple "thank you" can go a long, long way. - A long the same line-- leave treats for your garbage and recycling workers.
Another profession that may go unnoticed by many, but one that is so important in our modern world. I, for one, know I don't want to haul my own garbage to the dump. Technically, this one isn't free, BUT you could buy a pack of something and share from that. Treats can be candy canes, a pack of gum, a tin of cookies. - Call your grandma, an aunt, or a relative/friend who recently lost someone this past year
Text messages are convenient. Social media is great for reaching the masses. However, one on one connection via the phone can really brighten someone's day. I'm thinking of a grandma or grandpa who may not otherwise get many calls. Or an aunt or uncle without social media who may feel "out of the loop" but would light up receiving an actual phone call. Lastly, if there is a person in your life who recently lost someone and this will be their first Christmas without them. Connect. Love those in your life. - Lastly, this is a free and fun stress reliever... have a holiday music dance party.
Christmas time is full of fun, laughter, and special traditions. Make this your go to way to enjoy family time while getting all of that extra energy out. Have a silly, loud, formal, (or whatever type suits your family) dance party. Get the music playing and bust out those dance moves. TOGETHER!
I hope these eight ways to still spread the love this Christmas season inspire you to do your part.
