Six Books About Winter Younger Children Will Love Snow Much!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

By Arianna Larson December 21, 2022

It’s snowing. AGAIN. Just in time for the next big snowstorm and winter break, these books are sure to be enjoyed by babies, toddlers, and younger children alike. Cuddle up together and read these books while watching the beautiful snow fall down.

  1. Snowmen at Night
Written by Caralyn Buehner Illustrated by Mark Buehner

We read this one over and over in my house! It’s an adorable book about what snowmen do at night and why they often look a little less like themselves the next day. It’s wonderfully told through rhyme which is always a favorite of mine. The illustrations are beautiful and there are secret images hidden throughout the book that older kiddos will love to spy!

  1. Sadie and the Snowman
Written by Allen Morgan Illustrated by Brenda Clark

Follow Sadie as she makes a snowman only to learn that after time, he indeed melts. Not only that, but those pesky animals steal the snowman’s face. Every time. After repeating the cycle of making and melting she learns how to overcome the adversity she faces as she figures out how to keep him from melting completely for good.

  1. Dream Snow
Written and Illustrated by Eric Carle

This is a cute board book and Eric Carle’s only Christmas book. It features a tired farmer and a barn full of animals. I particularly love this one for younger kids because you count 1-5 multiple times. Short, simple sentences make this book a delight to read just before bed. Images of snow can dance around in your little one’s head as they drift off to their own dreamland.

  1. The Snowy Day
Written and Illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats

When thinking of winter, snow, and reading, is there anything more iconic than the book The Snowy Day? Join Peter as he embarks outside to enjoy the freshly fallen snow. His usual urban neighborhood is blanketed in white, powdery snow which he’s eager to explore. Bonus- you can get outside and make your own tracks in the snow after reading this book.

  1. Stella, Queen of the Snow
Written and Illustrated by Marie-Louise Gay

Any Stella and Sam fans? We sure are! As Sam experiences his first snowstorm, big sister Stella is eager to share everything she knows about snow! Just the sweetest sister and brother relationship played out through gorgeously painted images. These two will surely warm your hearts.

  1. A Winter Day
Written and Illustrated by Douglas Florian

A picture book that is few on words but big on scenery, this one will be sure to delight those kiddos with an active imagination or who like to make up their own stories as they read along. A Winter Day simplifies just how much joy one can find when the earth goes from gray to white!
